Alex has been engaged in the maker movement for many years, developing co-design tools, adopting distributed design and co-founding Hangpod. It’s in this intersection between maker culture and professional design, that Alex developed novel approaches to some of our greatest challenges.
As we must learn to reduce our impact on the earth and co-exist equitably with each other, it is now more relevant than ever that we embrace and explore sustainable design, circular economy, participatory design, inclusivity and new technologies.
That’s the purpose of Alex Kimber Design (AKD). A creative design studio with a mission to maximise the potential of digital fabrication, engage with the maker movement and think holistically about sustainable design, to lead by example in creating beautiful, user-centred and inclusive products.
So far, this work on using distributed design as an alternative approach has been recognised by the Danish Design Centre and open source development platform Wikifactory. Alex has co-authored in a peer review journal from the Design Society and in the published book “This Is Distributed Design” from the Distributed Design Market Platform. AKD has given a number of design workshops, webinars and consultations, ranging from right to repair through to distributed design, including the online course Design for Distributed. AKD has also developed a growing range of biophilic 3D printed furniture, produced by LA based smart living and technology brand Materi Concepts.
It’s been a long journey, from a garden shed to bringing about a sustainable vision of design, that will inspire other designers, that solves real problems and empowers people to engage with making material things. But the journey is only beginning. Contact us for more on our story and how we can offer an alternative approach for your design needs.
